One person was killed and several others injured when a vehicle carrying two families travelling from Abu Dhabi to Salalah overturned near Haima at around 1:30am on Saturday.
According to the Royal Oman Police (ROP), the injured were airlifted to Nizwa Hospital for treatment.
The group comprised Salil, his wife Surumi and their four children, as well as his friend Shaheen, his wife and their two children.
The 4x4 vehicle reportedly overturned about 40km from Nizwa. Salil and his daughter were critically injured, while the other passengers sustained moderate to serious injuries and were taken to hospital.
The ROP urged motorists travelling to Dhofar during the Khareef season to exercise extreme caution, particularly on long journeys.
It advised drivers not to continue driving when feeling sleepy or fatigued and to strictly observe road safety regulations.
“Please obey speed limits and maintain a safe distance between vehicles. Avoid reckless overtaking, speeding and driving on natural green spaces,” the ROP said.
It also urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and that tyres are in good condition before undertaking long journeys.
“Take regular breaks and rest if you feel fatigued during the journey,” it added.
